Switches and Disconnects

Disconnect switches are used to interrupt the flow of an electrical current. A disconnect switch will isolate electrical circuits in order to quickly stop the flow of electricity for maintenance, switching to alternate power sources, or for emergency shutdowns. 

Switches are composed of an enclosure, an actuator, and wired electrical contacts. Contacts are protected by the enclosure from environmental hazards and from users touching live circuits. Handles or knobs on the exterior allow users to turn contacts on and off without opening the enclosure. Most switches and disconnects allow for a lockout/tag-out system to prevent accidentally turning the system on too soon.
